JSW MG Motor to Replace MG Astor and MG ZS EV With New Mid-Size SUV on SIGMA Platform, Launch Expected in 2027

JSW MG Motor India is planning a new mid-size SUV for India that will replace the MG Astor and MG ZS EV. The model will be based on the new SIGMA platform and could launch in 2027 to rival the Hyundai Creta.

JSW-MG Motor Planning New Mid-Size SUV to Replace Astor and ZS EV

JSW MG Motor India is preparing to completely revamp its mid-size SUV lineup in India. The company plans to replace the current MG Astor and MG ZS EV with a new-generation model. This upcoming SUV will be based on an all-new modular platform and is expected to launch around 2027.

MG gained an early advantage in India’s mid-size electric SUV segment by launching the ZS EV in 2020. Later, the company introduced the petrol-powered Astor. However, the Astor did not receive the response from Indian customers that the company had expected. As a result, MG is now planning to replace both models with a more advanced and modern SUV.

SUV to Be Built on New SIGMA Platform

MG’s upcoming mid-size SUV will be built on the company’s SIGMA platform (SAIC Intelligent Global Modular Architecture).

The key advantage of this platform is its flexibility, as it can support multiple powertrain options, including:

  • Petrol or traditional ICE engines

  • Fully electric (EV) powertrains

  • Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems

This flexibility will allow MG to develop multiple models using the same platform.

Could Compete With the Creta

The new MG SUV will be designed specifically for the Indian market. According to reports, it could feature:

  • Next-generation technology

  • More advanced features

  • Improved connectivity

  • Modern exterior and interior design

With these upgrades, the company aims to compete strongly with segment leaders like the Hyundai Creta.

Expected Launch Timeline

The new MG mid-size SUV is expected to launch around 2027. However, its final design has not yet been revealed. Reports suggest that the design could differ from the global MG One SUV and may be developed specifically with Indian customers in mind.

New MG Cars Planned for India

JSW MG Motor India is planning several new launches in the coming years.

Expected launches include:

  • MG IM6 – Expected in 2025

  • A new SUV to rival the Mahindra XUV700 – Expected by 2026

  • India’s first mass-market PHEV SUV based on the Wuling Starlight 560

  • New Astor / ZS EV replacement SUV – Expected in 2027

Major Company Investment

MG plans to invest around $440 million (approximately ₹3,600 crore) to expand its production capacity and develop new electric and hybrid vehicles in India.

Currently, the company’s sales are largely driven by the MG Windsor EV, which is expected to become one of India’s best-selling electric cars in 2025.

MG is now working on a completely new strategy to strengthen its position in the Indian market. This upcoming SUV, built on a new platform and offering hybrid and electric powertrains, could be an important step for the company.
