SpaceX Prepares Starship V3 Launch with Powerful New Raptor 3 Engines

SpaceX is preparing the first Starship V3 launch powered by next-generation Raptor 3 engines with higher thrust, improved efficiency, and lower manufacturing costs.

SpaceX Getting Ready for Starship V3 Debut

SpaceX is preparing the next test launch of its Starship rocket, which is expected to mark the first flight of the new Starship V3 version. The launch could take place in early April, according to statements from Elon Musk.

The new spacecraft generation introduces several engineering upgrades, including the next-generation Raptor 3 rocket engines.

Raptor 3 Engine: More Power and Simpler Design

The new SpaceX Raptor 3 engine represents a major evolution over the previous SpaceX Raptor 2 engine.

Key improvements include:

  • Higher thrust: about 280 tons, compared with 230 tons for Raptor 2

  • Improved efficiency

  • Lower engine weight

  • Integrated cooling system, eliminating the need for external thermal protection

The engine is also designed to be much easier and cheaper to produce, with manufacturing costs reportedly about four times lower than the previous version.

Most importantly, Raptor 3 is optimized for full reusability in the Starship V3 system.

Starship: The Most Powerful Rocket Under Development

The Starship rocket system is currently the most powerful launch vehicle under development. SpaceX intends to use it for missions such as:

  • Large-scale satellite launches

  • Deep space exploration

  • Crewed missions to the Moon

  • Future missions to Mars

The company has already completed a major testing milestone for the first Starship V3 prototype, signaling progress toward the next launch campaign.

Possible New Heat Shield Technology

Observers have also noticed unusual white heat shield tiles on the hull of Starship Ship 45 at the SpaceX Starfactory production site.

The discovery was first highlighted by Ceaser G from the NASASpaceflight community.

Although SpaceX has not officially explained the change, analysts believe the tiles may represent an experimental heat shield design intended to improve thermal protection during atmospheric re-entry.

Next Test Launch Expected Soon

If the development timeline remains on track, the first flight of Starship V3 could occur within weeks. The upcoming test will likely focus on:

  • Demonstrating Raptor 3 engine performance

  • Testing new thermal protection systems

  • Advancing reusable rocket operations

The launch will be closely watched as a major step toward SpaceX’s long-term plans for lunar and Mars missions.
