Mitsubishi Working on New Electric Car Based on Nissan Leaf, Launch Expected in 2026
Mitsubishi Motors is reportedly preparing a new electric vehicle for the North American market, and it will be closely related to the next-generation Nissan Leaf. The upcoming EV has already been spotted undergoing road testing and appears visually very similar to the third-generation Leaf.
The new model is expected to share key technology with the latest Leaf, including a 75 kWh battery pack and a 174-horsepower front-mounted electric motor. With this setup, the electric car could deliver a driving range of up to 487 km (300 miles) on a single charge.
One notable feature likely to be included is the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, which would allow the vehicle to access the extensive Tesla Supercharger network across North America.
Recently, Nissan canceled plans for a more affordable Leaf variant with a 52 kWh battery, reportedly due to lower-than-expected demand. Because of this decision, the Mitsubishi version is also unlikely to receive a cheaper entry-level battery option.
The official debut of the new Mitsubishi EV is expected in the summer of 2026. Considering that the latest Leaf starts at under $30,000 in the United States, Mitsubishi’s upcoming electric model could become one of the most affordable EVs available in the US and Canadian markets.
