You may have bought an electric car, but now you might be wondering where to charge it and how much it will cost. Today, we will clear all those doubts.

Most modern electric cars and SUVs support fast charging. If you charge your EV at a DC fast charging station, the cost will usually be higher because the battery can be charged in minutes instead of hours. This saves time but increases the charging price.

On the other hand, if you charge the EV at home using an AC charger, it will take longer. However, it is more convenient and generally cheaper than public charging stations.

How Much Does It Cost to Charge an EV at Home for One Hour?

Let’s understand EV charging costs with a simple example.

If you charge your electric car at home using a standard 15-amp socket or a 7.2 kW AC wall-box charger, the power consumption can be around 7–8 units of electricity per hour.

In India, if the electricity rate is ₹6–₹7 per unit, the charging cost will be around:

₹40 to ₹50 per hour

This means charging an EV at home is usually quite affordable compared to petrol or diesel cars.

DC Fast Charging Cost in India (per kWh)

In India, DC fast charging at public EV charging stations is more expensive than home charging because it uses high-power equipment and charges the battery much faster.

• Average DC fast charging price: ₹15 to ₹25 per kWh

• Some premium or highway chargers may charge ₹18 to ₹25 per kWh or more depending on the network and location.

Example Calculation

Suppose an electric car has a 40 kWh battery and you charge it at a fast charger costing ₹20 per kWh:

• 40 × ₹20 = ₹800 for a full charge.

This usually gives 300–350 km driving range, meaning the running cost is roughly ₹2–₹3 per km, which is still cheaper than petrol or diesel cars.
