Honda Zero Alpha Electric SUV Begins Pan-India Road Testing Ahead of 2026-27 Launch

Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) has commenced public road validation testing of its upcoming battery electric SUV, the Zero Alpha (0 α), in India. The test run was flagged off from Honda’s manufacturing plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan. The model was originally unveiled as a prototype at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 and is expected to launch in the Indian market in the financial year 2026–27, with India and Japan among the first markets. The SUV will be produced locally in India and exported to other countries.

Honda Begins Pan-India Road Testing

The testing programme has been designed to evaluate the Zero Alpha under real Indian driving conditions. The SUV will be tested across highways, city traffic, and challenging terrains, with a focus on durability, handling, ride comfort, efficiency, and reliability. Testing will also cover extreme heat and monsoon conditions, and charging performance will be evaluated across various charging networks to ensure suitability for everyday use.

Competition in the Midsize Electric SUV Segment

The midsize electric SUV segment in India is becoming increasingly competitive, with Tata Motors, Mahindra, JSW MG Motor, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, and VinFast all active in the space. Honda’s entry will give Indian buyers access to the brand’s latest electric vehicle technology. Early estimates suggest an ex-showroom starting price of around ₹20 lakh, though this has not been officially confirmed. The Zero Alpha is expected to offer a single-charge range of at least 500 km.

Statement from Honda Cars India CEO

Speaking at the flag-off event, Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, said: “Public road validation testing across India is a major milestone in our electrification journey. Driving and weather conditions in India are diverse, making it crucial for us to test our electric vehicles in realistic conditions. This programme demonstrates Honda’s global engineering capabilities while remaining focused on customer needs as we prepare to introduce a reliable, comfortable, and easy-to-drive electric SUV.”
