The high-performance version of Kia’s flagship electric SUV, the Kia EV9 GT, has officially arrived, bringing more power, sharper styling, and enhanced driving dynamics to the already popular EV9 lineup. While it adds excitement and sportiness to a practical family SUV, the EV9 GT also raises an important question—does it really make sense over the regular EV9?

A Sportier Take on a Practical SUV

Kia has been gradually expanding its performance-focused GT lineup, and the EV9 GT is one of the most ambitious additions so far. Positioned above the standard EV9 variants, this model aims to combine performance with practicality in a large, three-row electric SUV.

At over five meters long and available in six- or seven-seat configurations, the EV9 GT retains the practicality that defines the standard model. However, it adds a more aggressive character with performance upgrades and distinctive styling elements.

Powerful Dual-Motor Setup

At the heart of the EV9 GT is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that produces an impressive 501bhp and 740Nm of torque. These figures place it among the most powerful SUVs in its class.

Despite its strong output, the EV9 GT’s performance is somewhat limited by its substantial weight. With a kerb weight of around 2,718kg, and potentially reaching over 3.3 tonnes when fully loaded, the SUV does not deliver the explosive acceleration one might expect from a 500bhp vehicle.

Kia claims a 0–62mph sprint time of 4.6 seconds, which is quick for a vehicle of this size. However, the sensation of speed feels more controlled than dramatic, largely due to the SUV’s mass.

Advanced Driving Technology

To manage its power effectively, the EV9 GT comes equipped with advanced systems such as electronic Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control (eDTVC) and an electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD). These technologies help distribute power efficiently across the wheels, improving traction and stability.

The SUV also offers multiple driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, and a dedicated GT mode. There are also off-road modes and a customizable MyDrive setting, allowing drivers to tailor the driving experience to their preferences.

GT mode, activated via a bright button on the steering wheel, sharpens throttle response, increases steering weight, and optimizes braking and torque distribution. In this mode, the EV9 GT feels more responsive and engaging, especially on winding roads.

Impressive Handling for Its Size

One of the standout aspects of the EV9 GT is its handling. Despite its size and weight, the SUV remains composed and balanced, even on wet and twisty roads.

The power delivery, particularly when exiting corners, feels rear-biased, adding a sporty character to the driving experience. The braking system also performs well under repeated heavy use, although frequent spirited driving may lead to quicker wear compared to standard EV models.

Electronic dampers further enhance handling by reducing body roll and maintaining stability. While the EV9 GT never feels truly agile due to its size, it does an impressive job of managing its mass.

Ride Quality: A Compromise

While performance has improved, ride comfort takes a slight hit in the EV9 GT. Compared to the regular EV9, the suspension is noticeably firmer, which can make the ride feel unsettled on uneven surfaces.

On smoother roads, the SUV remains comfortable and refined, making it a capable long-distance cruiser. However, on rougher surfaces, the stiffness may not appeal to buyers looking for a family-friendly ride.

This trade-off highlights the challenge of balancing performance and comfort in a large SUV.

Design and Styling Enhancements

Visually, the EV9 GT stands out with several sporty upgrades. These include unique 21-inch alloy wheels, neon green brake calipers, and redesigned front and rear bumpers.

Inside the cabin, the sporty theme continues with neon green accents on the steering wheel, seats, and ambient lighting. The front seats feature Alcantara trim and enhanced bolstering, providing better support during spirited driving.

Despite these changes, the overall layout and practicality remain unchanged, ensuring that the EV9 GT continues to offer excellent usability.

Spacious and Practical Interior

The EV9 GT retains the spacious and versatile interior of the standard model. The second row offers ample legroom, whether configured as a bench or individual captain seats, while the third row can comfortably accommodate shorter adults.

Boot space is equally impressive:

These figures make the EV9 GT a highly practical choice for families, even with its performance focus.

In daily use, the EV9 GT feels familiar and user-friendly. Visibility is good, and the dashboard layout is intuitive, with a mix of physical and touch controls.

Features like easy smartphone connectivity, accessible climate controls, and ample storage space enhance convenience. These elements ensure that the EV9 GT remains a practical SUV despite its sporty intentions.

Range and Efficiency

The EV9 GT uses the same 99.8kWh battery pack (96kWh usable) as other EV9 variants. Kia claims a range of up to 316 miles, which is competitive for a large electric SUV.

However, real-world efficiency tells a different story. During testing, efficiency figures dropped to around 2.5 miles/kWh under normal driving conditions, and as low as 2.1 miles/kWh when driven aggressively.

This means that drivers using the full performance potential of the EV9 GT can expect a real-world range closer to 200 miles or even less. Frequent charging may be required, especially for enthusiastic driving.

Final Verdict: Fun but Not the Most Sensible Choice

The Kia EV9 GT successfully adds excitement to an already impressive electric SUV. With its strong performance, sporty styling, and advanced technology, it offers a unique blend of practicality and driving engagement.

However, these benefits come at a cost. The higher price, reduced ride comfort, and lower real-world efficiency make it less practical than the standard EV9.

For most buyers, the regular EV9 remains the more sensible choice, offering better comfort and efficiency while still delivering strong performance. The EV9 GT, on the other hand, is best suited for those who prioritize excitement and are willing to accept its compromises.
