As summer arrives, AC usage in cars increases significantly. While the AC keeps the cabin cool, it also draws power directly from the engine, adding extra load and increasing fuel consumption. Many drivers reduce AC usage to save fuel — but the smarter approach is to use it correctly. Here is how to keep your car cool without hurting your mileage.
What Fan Speed Should You Use?
Most cars offer fan speed settings from 1 to 4, with 1 being the lowest and 4 the highest. Running the AC consistently at 3 or 4 cools the cabin quickly but puts greater strain on the engine and burns more fuel. A better approach is to start at a higher speed to bring the cabin temperature down, then drop to speed 1 or 2 to maintain it. At lower speeds, the engine is under less stress and fuel efficiency improves noticeably.
For cars with automatic climate control, setting the temperature between 24°C and 26°C is ideal. This keeps the cabin comfortable while reducing the AC compressor’s workload, which in turn saves fuel.
Simple Tips to Improve Mileage in Summer

If your car has been parked in the sun, do not switch on the AC immediately. Instead, open the windows for a minute or two first to let the hot air escape. This allows the AC to reach the desired temperature faster and with less effort.
Always use recirculation mode when the AC is running. This recycles the already-cooled air inside the cabin rather than drawing in hot air from outside, reducing the time and energy needed to maintain a comfortable temperature.
On days that are warm but not intensely hot, consider using just the blower without the AC compressor. This provides airflow without the additional engine load.
