LMS-901 Baikal Aircraft Testing Nears Completion, Certification Expected in 2026

LMS-901 Baikal aircraft completes major flight tests with new engine. Discover performance specs and expected certification timeline.

Baikal Aircraft Testing Update: The Baikal aircraft, developed as a replacement for the aging An-2 “Kukuruznik,” is currently undergoing final stages of testing. The new light multirole aircraft aims to modernize regional aviation with improved performance and efficiency.

According to Anton Alikhanov, certification testing of the Baikal aircraft is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. He also noted that the aircraft is already actively flying as part of its test program. However, the certification timeline could be delayed by approximately one to six weeks.

In December 2025, the LMS-901 Baikal prototype successfully completed its maiden flight during joint flight tests. These tests involved the new domestically developed VK-800 engine and the AV-901 propeller, marking a key milestone in the aircraft’s development.

The LMS-901 Baikal is designed to replace the Soviet-era Antonov An-2. It is a nine-seater aircraft built for versatility and regional connectivity. The aircraft offers a cruising speed of up to 300 km/h and a maximum range of approximately 3,000 km. With a payload capacity of up to 2 tons, it can cover distances of around 1,500 km efficiently.

This aircraft is expected to play a crucial role in improving connectivity in remote and rural regions, while also providing a modern and reliable alternative to older aircraft currently in service.
