In a major boost for India’s electric vehicle ecosystem, a new initiative called Light Electric Vehicle Acceleration Forum (LEAF) has been launched to address one of the biggest challenges in EV adoption—charging compatibility.
The initiative aims to create a unified and reliable charging system for electric vehicles, especially in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments.
What is LEAF Initiative?
The LEAF platform brings together automakers, charging infrastructure providers, and technology companies to collaborate on improving EV charging systems across India.
The initiative was officially inaugurated by H. D. Kumaraswamy, marking a significant step toward strengthening India’s EV ecosystem.
Focus on Universal Charging System
One of the biggest issues EV users face today is incompatibility between charging networks. Chargers from different brands often do not support all vehicles, creating inconvenience for users.
To solve this, LEAF will promote a standardized charging system based on:
- Light Electric Combined Charging System (LECCS)
- Approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards
- Uses a Type-7 connector
- Supports both slow and fast charging
This will allow EV users to charge their vehicles at any compatible station, regardless of the brand.
Major Companies Join the Initiative
Several leading companies in India’s EV ecosystem have come together under LEAF, including:
- Hero MotoCorp
- Ather Energy
- IPEC India
More than 20 companies have already joined the initiative, and additional players are expected to participate in the coming months.
