Volkswagen Atlas 2027: A New Flagship SUV for Global Markets (Except Europe)
Volkswagen has unveiled the updated Atlas 2027, positioning it as a flagship SUV for markets like the United States and China. Interestingly, while the brand has phased out the Touareg in several regions, including the US, this new-generation Atlas will not be introduced in Europe for now.
Touareg Replacement with a Different Strategy
Volkswagen has taken a different route compared to rivals like Audi, BMW, and Porsche, which continue to expand their large SUV lineups globally. Instead of developing a direct successor to the Touareg, VW is focusing on region-specific flagship models like the Atlas.
While Europe misses out, the Atlas continues to serve as VW’s premium SUV in the US, with a nearly identical version sold in China as the Volkswagen Terramont.
Powertrain and Platform
The new Atlas is built on the MQB Evo platform and comes with a familiar yet powerful engine setup:
- Engine: 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged petrol
- Power Output: 207 kW (282 hp)
- Torque: 350 Nm
- Drivetrain: All-wheel drive
A hybrid version similar to models like Tiguan or T-Roc may be introduced later, although a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is unlikely at this stage.
Bold Design and Premium Styling
The 2027 Atlas features a refreshed design both inside and out:
- New front fascia with dual LED headlight setup
- Illuminated VW logo and light bars
- Stylish LED tail lamps at the rear
- Illuminated door handles and welcome lighting
The overall design is more premium and visually appealing, especially in darker conditions.
Spacious Cabin with Advanced Comfort
Designed as a full-size family SUV, the Atlas offers up to seven seats and a highly practical interior layout.
Key highlights include:
- 12.9-inch and optional 15-inch infotainment displays
- Premium leather seats with contrast stitching
- Panoramic sunroof
- Power tailgate and sun blinds
- Ambient lighting and soft-touch materials
Enhanced Second-Row Comfort
Volkswagen has significantly improved comfort for rear passengers:
- Seat heating and ventilation (rear)
- Air vents integrated into B-pillars
- Optional captain seats (individual seating system)
Front passengers also get luxury features like massage seats, ventilation, and climate control, making long journeys more comfortable.
Tech and Connectivity Features
The Atlas 2027 is loaded with modern technology:
- Wireless charging for two smartphones
- Seven USB-C ports
- Advanced infotainment system
- Travel Assist for Level 2 semi-autonomous driving
Safety is also a priority with seven airbags and multiple driver assistance systems.
Pricing and Availability
The Atlas is manufactured in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and is expected to launch by the end of the year.
- Starting Price: Around $40,000
- Also available as a five-seat Atlas Cross Sport variant
>>> The Volkswagen Atlas 2027 emerges as a strong replacement for the Touareg in markets like the US and China. With its spacious cabin, powerful engine, and premium features, it caters to the growing demand for large SUVs.
However, the absence of a European launch may disappoint buyers in that region, especially at a time when demand for large, luxurious SUVs continues to rise globally.
