India’s First Driverless Pod Taxi: India’s first driverless pod taxi will soon become operational. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis performed the groundbreaking ceremony for this project on Tuesday. The project will be completed in phases, with the first phase expected to be finished within 10 months. Here are the key highlights of this pod taxi project.

The driverless pod taxi system is a significant initiative aimed at transforming urban mobility. It is being developed between Kurla and BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex) in Mumbai. Once completed, the project will greatly improve connectivity for daily commuters.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar were also present at the groundbreaking ceremony. Chief Minister Fadnavis stated that all necessary approvals for the project have been secured.

The project is being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) is one of Mumbai’s most prominent commercial hubs, housing multinational companies, banks, the National Stock Exchange, luxury hotels, and the Bharat Diamond Bourse.

22 Stations to Be Built

This 8.85-kilometer-long project will be developed in phases, with a total of 22 air-conditioned stations planned along the route at intervals of approximately 200 meters. Initially, the 3.36-kilometer stretch between Bandra (East) and Kurla will be operational.

The system will connect key areas such as LBS Marg, Kalanagar, and BKC. It will also enhance connectivity between Bandra and Kurla railway stations. The driverless, AI-powered pods will run on batteries and operate on a dedicated track. Each pod will have a seating capacity of up to six passengers.

Top Speed and Capacity

The pod taxis will operate at a maximum speed of 40 km/h. Pods will be available every 15 seconds and will stop only at stations selected by passengers, ensuring faster and more convenient travel.

The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. A depot will also be developed on the RLDA plot in Bandra East to support operations.

Officials believe this system will significantly reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai. By 2031, it is estimated that over 109,000 passengers will use the service daily.
