GM Recalls Over 270,000 Chevrolet Malibu Sedans in the U.S. Over Rearview Camera Fault

General Motors has announced a recall of more than 270,000 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles across the United States due to a defect affecting the rearview camera display.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue may cause the rearview camera screen to show a distorted image or go completely blank. This malfunction can limit the driver’s visibility behind the vehicle, raising the likelihood of a crash.

An official safety report revealed that the problem originates from a manufacturing defect in the camera unit. Specifically, a supplier identified a flaw in the bonding process used to seal the camera housing, which may weaken the adhesive. As a result, the camera assembly—produced by Sharp Electronics—could be vulnerable to moisture intrusion, potentially leading to failure.

The recall impacts Malibu models from the 2023 to 2025 model years.

GM has stated that it is currently unaware of any accidents or injuries linked to this issue.

To resolve the problem, authorized dealers will replace the faulty rearview cameras at no cost to vehicle owners. Notification letters are expected to be sent starting May 18.

Owners seeking additional information can contact Chevrolet customer support at 1-800-222-1020 or reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Further details are also available on the official www.nhtsa.gov. website.
