Rumor: Tesla May Resume Development of an Affordable Electric Car

Multiple sources suggest that Tesla is once again working on a compact and affordable electric vehicle. This comes as a surprise, as just two years ago, CEO Elon Musk had reportedly shut down the company’s low-cost EV program.

According to the latest reports, Tesla has resumed development of a budget-friendly model. The upcoming car is expected to be smaller and lighter than the Tesla Model Y, featuring a single motor instead of a dual-motor setup, along with a smaller battery pack. This downsizing will likely affect the overall driving range but should help keep costs lower.

Initial sales are expected to begin in China, with an estimated starting price of around $34,000. Production is likely to take place at Tesla’s Shanghai facility, although mass production is not expected to begin before 2027.

The revival of this project is particularly surprising, given that Tesla had previously abandoned its ambitious $25,000 EV plan in 2024. However, changing market conditions may have influenced this shift in strategy. Slowing global EV demand, underwhelming performance of the Tesla Cybertruck, and delays in autonomous driving initiatives could be key factors behind Tesla’s renewed focus on affordability.

If these reports prove accurate, this move could mark a significant turning point for Tesla as it looks to expand its reach in the competitive electric vehicle market.
