BMW is set to modernize its oldest manufacturing plant, transforming it into a state-of-the-art facility powered by artificial intelligence and advanced robotics. Following the upgrade, the plant will become highly automated and focus exclusively on electric vehicle production.
BMW’s first factory, built in Munich in 1922, is currently undergoing a massive modernization project worth $750 million. The facility will begin production of the new Neue Klasse electric sedan, expected to revive the BMW i3 nameplate, starting in August 2026.

By 2027, the Munich plant will become BMW’s first fully electric-only production facility. The upgraded body shop will feature around 800 industrial robots, enabling an automation level of approximately 98%.
Advanced AI systems will be used to inspect paint quality with high precision. Each machine in the plant will transmit up to 20,000 data parameters to the central production system, allowing real-time monitoring and optimization. The system will be capable of handling nearly 2.5 million parts per day.
Once fully operational, robots will manage about 60% of parts delivery within the plant. Production capacity is expected to reach up to 1,000 vehicles per day, marking a significant leap in efficiency and technological advancement.
