Tata Motors has achieved a remarkable milestone in its commercial vehicle (CV) journey, which began with a single truck and has now reached one million vehicles. From rolling out its first truck in 1954 to building a modern and diverse CV portfolio, the company has played a crucial role in shaping India’s transport sector.
A journey that began in 1945
Tata Motors’ journey started in 1945 as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO). In 1954, the company entered into a collaboration with Daimler-Benz, laying a strong foundation for India’s commercial vehicle industry.
On October 15, 1954, the first Tata Mercedes-Benz truck (TMB 312) rolled out from the Jamshedpur plant. This 3–5 tonne capacity truck, producing around 90–100 HP, became one of the earliest heavy-duty trucks manufactured in India and significantly transformed the country’s logistics and transport landscape.
Becoming self-reliant in the 1970s
The collaboration with Daimler-Benz continued until 1969. After that, Tata Motors began manufacturing vehicles under its own brand. The company expanded its production capacity in the 1970s with the establishment of its Pune plant, focusing on medium and heavy commercial vehicles.
A major breakthrough came in 1986 with the launch of the Tata 407. This light commercial vehicle revolutionized the segment with its affordability, versatility, and reliability, becoming a favorite among small businesses and transporters.
Tata Ace: A game changer
In 2005, Tata Motors introduced the Tata Ace, India’s first mini truck. It became a game changer in last-mile delivery and played a significant role in empowering small entrepreneurs, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
During the 2000s, the company also expanded globally by acquiring Daewoo Commercial Vehicles in 2004. It simultaneously increased its focus on green mobility solutions, including electric and CNG-powered vehicles.
Reaching a historic milestone
On April 15, 2026, Tata Motors reached a major milestone when it rolled out its one millionth commercial vehicle from its Lucknow plant. The event was marked in the presence of Yogi Adityanath.
The Lucknow facility, established in 1992 and spread across 600 acres, is a key hub for manufacturing cargo vehicles, passenger buses, electric buses, and other green mobility solutions.
A legacy of innovation and growth
This milestone reflects more than 70 years of innovation, resilience, and contribution to India’s economic growth. Today, Tata Motors offers a wide portfolio of light, intermediate, medium, and heavy commercial vehicles, along with advanced electric mobility solutions.
