India May Move Beyond E20: Government Preparing for E85 Fuel Rollout
The Government of India is considering a major shift in its fuel strategy by moving beyond E20 petrol to introduce E85 fuel. According to reports, a draft notification allowing the use of E85 is ready and is expected to be issued soon.
From April 1, 2026, E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend) is being made available across the country. However, due to rising geopolitical tensions and increasing vehicular pollution, the government is now exploring higher ethanol blends like E85.
Draft Notification Ready
As per an ET Auto report, a senior government official confirmed that the draft notification for E85 fuel is ready. The official stated that market consensus has been achieved, and preliminary vehicle testing for E85 compatibility has already been completed.
However, the rollout will not happen immediately, as implementing E85 requires significant changes in infrastructure and vehicle compatibility.
Not Compatible with Standard Petrol Engines
E85 fuel is significantly different from E20 and cannot be used in standard petrol engines.
It requires:
- Flex-fuel compatible vehicles
- Dedicated fuel distribution systems
While engines designed for E85 can operate on lower ethanol blends, conventional engines—especially older ones—may face:
- Performance issues
- Reduced efficiency
- Long-term damage due to corrosion and wear
Push for Energy Security
One of the key reasons behind promoting E85 fuel is to reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil.
With global conflicts, especially in West Asia, fuel imports have become increasingly uncertain. By increasing ethanol blending, India aims to:
- Strengthen energy security
- Reduce reliance on imports
- Promote domestic fuel production
Environmental Benefits
Ethanol-blended fuels also contribute to lower emissions. Higher ethanol content supports cleaner combustion, helping reduce pollution levels from vehicles.
Future Outlook
While E85 may become a key part of India’s fuel ecosystem in the future, no official timeline for its implementation has been announced yet.
The transition from E20 petrol to E85 fuel marks a significant step toward cleaner and more self-reliant energy solutions.
