Oliver Zipse Wins 2026 World Car Person of the Year
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW Group, has officially been named the 2026 World Car Person of the Year in recognition of his role in the company’s engineering-led transformation.
The award places him among a select group of global automotive leaders who have achieved this prestigious honor.
Recognised for Technology-Open Strategy
The announcement comes as Zipse prepares to conclude his tenure as Chairman, a position he has held since 2019. The award was decided by a jury of 98 international automotive journalists, including members from India.
The jury specifically praised his “technology-open” strategy and the successful rollout of the Neue Klasse platform, regarded as one of the most significant technological shifts in BMW’s history.
Zipse joined BMW in 1991 and edged out strong finalists, including David Craig of General Motors and Tisha Johnson of Slate, to secure the top honor.
The jury also highlighted his ability to maintain record profitability even as the auto industry rapidly shifts toward electrification and digitalisation.
Zipse Calls It Recognition of BMW’s Direction
Reacting to the honour, Zipse said the award reflects more than his personal tenure.
“For me, this is more than just an award for my tenure as BMW CEO: it is recognition of our strategic direction and the courage we have shown in pursuing the company’s biggest project to date, the Neue Klasse.”
Unlike many competitors that focused only on battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), Zipse championed a multi-powertrain approach, keeping BMW competitive across segments.
Industry Validation and Legacy
Jens Meiners, honorary chairman of the World Car Awards, said the strategy has been “fully validated by the market”, adding that BMW’s current lineup is among its strongest ever.
Previous winners of the award include Stella Li (2025) of BYD and Adrian Newey (2024).
As Zipse prepares to step down, he leaves BMW Group in a position of strong financial stability and technological readiness. The Neue Klasse platform is expected to stand as his defining legacy, shaping the brand’s direction for the next decade.
