Ford has made the Mustang Mach-E’s front trunk an optional extra
Buyers of the new electric Ford Mustang Mach‑E have lost a previously standard feature. What was once considered an essential part of the vehicle is now a paid option, and it has surprised many customers.
For the 2026 model year, the front trunk (frunk) is no longer included as standard equipment. Buyers must now select a $495 option to add it when configuring their vehicle.

The feature appears in the exterior options section, alongside items such as bumper guards, a tire inflation kit, and license plate mounts. The 2026 Mustang Mach-E itself starts at $39,840 before any optional extras.
The front trunk had been standard across all Mustang Mach-E variants through the 2025 model year. However, Ford Motor Company is not the first automaker to monetize previously included features.
BMW previously faced criticism for offering heated seat subscriptions through its Functions on Demand system.
