Xiaomi Auto Targets Industry-Leading Battery Safety with 1,600+ Patents

Xiaomi Auto is strengthening EV battery safety with over 1,600 patents, in-house production, and a 3,500-member safety team. Here's what it means for future electric cars.

Xiaomi Auto aims to make its batteries the best and safest in their class.

Lei Jun stated that Xiaomi must produce high-quality batteries—a principle the company established five years ago when it entered the automotive market. Xiaomi Auto is determined to make its batteries the best and safest in their class.

During a livestream last week, Lei Jun announced that Xiaomi’s automotive safety team had grown to more than 3,500 people.

The company employs a dedicated team of over 220 people responsible for battery research and development. Since its founding, the company has filed a total of 486 patent applications related to battery systems, of which 190 have been granted. These patents cover six key technology areas, including spark safety, structural safety, thermal safety, and electrical safety.

Thanks to these technological solutions, Xiaomi batteries have passed the most stringent industry tests, and the company’s corporate standards exceed the new national standards that will be implemented in 2025.

Xiaomi has also built its own battery production plant in Yizhuang, Beijing, ensuring independent control over the entire process—from incoming cells and modules to the battery pack itself. This deep integration of proprietary technologies and in-house manufacturing has enabled Xiaomi to achieve numerous breakthroughs in battery safety, including impact resistance, thermal insulation, and explosion protection.

Beyond the battery itself, Xiaomi Auto’s total number of related patents has exceeded 1,600. In 2025 alone, 1,184 new patent applications were published, covering key areas such as electric drive systems, intelligent driving, battery management, and vehicle safety.
