2GIS Launches Realistic 3D Terrain Maps for Mountains and Ski Resorts

2GIS introduces realistic 3D terrain mapping, allowing users to view mountains and elevation changes for better route planning in popular tourist and ski destinations.

The team at 2GIS, a popular reference and mapping service, has rolled out a major update. Users can now access realistic 3D terrain, enabling them to view mountains and elevation changes in their natural form. According to the company, this feature is especially useful for assessing the difficulty of trails and routes in mountainous regions and ski resorts.

3D terrain mapping is currently available in popular tourist areas such as Sochi, Sheregesh, Arkhyz, Dombay, Mount Elbrus, Manzherok, and Zolotaya Dolina. Users can explore slopes and trails in advance, helping them plan routes more accurately and prepare for the terrain.

Alexey Milekhin, Maps Manager at 2GIS, explained:
“We continue to develop realistic maps in 2GIS: we’re not only adding individual objects but also making the map more realistic overall—so it can help you get a first impression of what you’ll see when you arrive at a new location. Realistic 3D terrain makes the map easier to understand in areas where elevation is important: on ski slopes, hiking trails, and mountain roads.”

The feature is available in the online beta version and in the latest versions of the iOS and Android apps. It can be enabled via the “3D Relief” button in the upper right corner of the screen.
