Apple Prepares Video Streaming for CarPlay Display with Upcoming iOS 26.4

Apple may soon enable video playback on CarPlay screens via AirPlay in iOS 26.4. Here’s how it works, safety limits, and expected rollout.

Apple Working on CarPlay Video Playback

Apple is preparing to introduce video playback on car displays through Apple CarPlay. References to AirPlay video streaming were discovered in the iOS 26.4 beta, suggesting the feature may launch soon.

The company had previously previewed this capability at WWDC 2025, and new system code now points to its near-term release.

How the Feature Will Work

According to developers, an iPhone connected to CarPlay will be able to stream video from any AirPlay-enabled app directly to the vehicle’s infotainment screen.

Key functionality:

  • Video streams from iPhone to car display

  • Works with AirPlay-compatible apps

  • Dedicated button appears in Dynamic Island

  • Quick switch back to phone playback

This aims to provide a seamless media experience when the vehicle is stationary.

Safety Lock: Only When Parked

Apple is implementing strict safety controls.

  • Video playback activates only when the car is parked

  • This is a mandatory safety requirement

  • Playback will be disabled while driving

This approach aligns with industry safety standards for in-car entertainment.

Apple TV App Spotted in CarPlay Simulator

Developers also discovered the Apple TV app inside the CarPlay simulator.

The app interface provides access to:

  • Apple TV+ content

  • User media library

  • MLS match section

However, it is still unclear whether the full feature set will be available in the final in-car version. An Xcode demo showed a functional but unfinished interface.

Expected Release Timeline

  • Likely arrival: iOS 26.4 public release

  • Expected window: late March or early April

  • Possible delay: could slip to iOS 26.5

Automakers must add support on their side, meaning the rollout will be gradual and likely limited initially to newer vehicle models.

Apple’s upcoming CarPlay video streaming feature could significantly enhance in-car entertainment when parked. However, availability will depend on both software rollout timing and automaker support, so widespread adoption may take time.
