BMW Recalls 5 and 7 Series in North America Over Potential Fire Risk During Filter Replacement

BMW issues recall for nearly 59,000 units of 5 Series and 7 Series, including i5, i7, and M5 models, due to incorrectly routed wiring that could pose a fire risk.

BMW has announced a recall affecting certain BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series vehicles in North America, including models from the 2026 model year, over a potential fire risk.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the climate control system wiring in some vehicles may have been routed incorrectly. During a routine cabin air filter replacement, there is a risk that the wiring harness could be damaged, potentially causing a short circuit and increasing the risk of fire.

The recall covers multiple variants, including the M5 sedan and wagon, several versions of the i5 and i7 electric vehicles, as well as the 550e and 750e plug-in hybrids. In total, approximately 59,000 vehicles manufactured between 2023 and 2026 will undergo inspection.

BMW noted that the defect is expected to affect only about 0.1% of the recalled vehicles. However, as a precaution, all affected units will be inspected. If an issue is detected, technicians will replace the wiring and install additional protective fasteners.

The automaker said there have been no reported fires, crashes, or injuries linked to this issue so far.

This follows a previous large-scale recall by BMW involving roughly 575,000 vehicles due to a potential starter relay overheating risk.
