BYD Introduces New Gen-2 Blade Battery With Faster Charging and Longer Range
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has announced a major technology upgrade for its electric vehicles. After six years, the company has introduced its second-generation Blade Battery, which promises faster charging, longer driving range, and improved safety.
However, some analysts believe that despite the technological improvements, the new battery may not immediately boost the company’s declining sales, as many consumers in the Chinese EV market currently prefer lower-priced electric vehicles.
Key Features of the New Blade Battery
The Gen-2 Blade Battery has been designed to deliver better performance, faster charging, and reliable operation even in extreme weather conditions.
Key Highlights:
# Super-Fast Charging: The battery can charge from 20% to 97% in less than 12 minutes.
# Extreme Weather Capability: It can operate in temperatures as low as –20°C.
# Long Driving Range: A single charge can provide up to 777 km of driving range.
# Enhanced Safety: BYD claims the battery has passed safety tests that are stricter than China’s new national standards.
Some Models May Cross 1,000 km Range
According to Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD, the higher energy density of this battery could significantly increase the driving range of the company’s premium electric vehicles.
Potential models expected to benefit include:
-
Denza Z9 GT
-
Yangwang U7
These models could potentially offer over 1,000 km of driving range with the new battery technology.
BYD’s Large Charging Network Plan
Alongside the new battery technology, BYD is also expanding its EV charging infrastructure rapidly.
Charging network targets:
-
Build 20,000 flash-charging stations by the end of 2026
-
Around 2,000 stations will be installed on highways
-
As of March 5, the company has already built more than 4,000 stations
This expansion could make long-distance EV travel more convenient for users.
New Models Launched With the Battery
During a three-hour live launch event, BYD introduced more than 10 new models equipped with the Gen-2 Blade Battery.
Price range:
-
Starting from 155,000 yuan (around $22,463)
-
Up to 1.3 million yuan
Some of the key models showcased include:
-
BYD Song Ultra EV
-
Yangwang U8L
Why Analysts Remain Cautious
Despite the impressive technology upgrades, market experts believe the company could still face challenges.
Key reasons include:
-
Growing demand for low-cost EVs in China
-
Intense competition in the EV market
-
Declining domestic sales in recent months
According to Eugene Hsiao, analyst at Macquarie Group, the current market environment may make it difficult for the company to quickly regain lost market share.
Market Competition and Changing Conditions
The company’s market position has weakened slightly in recent months.
-
Sales declined further during January–February.
-
Chinese automaker Geely overtook BYD in sales.
-
Volkswagen regained its position as the top-selling brand in China.
In addition, the removal of tax exemptions for EVs and plug-in hybrids is also affecting the overall market environment.
The Gen-2 Blade Battery from BYD represents a major advancement in EV technology with ultra-fast charging and longer driving range. However, in China’s highly competitive EV market, the company may need not only advanced technology but also a strong product and pricing strategy to strengthen its sales in the coming years.
