BYD Reveals Next-Generation Blade Battery
Chinese EV giant BYD has officially unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery, called Blade Battery 2.0, during a technology event held on March 5. The presentation was carried out under the theme “Flash Charging,” highlighting major improvements in charging speed, safety, and cold-weather performance.
According to the company, the new battery represents a significant breakthrough in EV charging technology and aims to solve some of the biggest limitations of electric vehicles.
Ultra-Fast Charging in Just Minutes
The most notable feature of Blade Battery 2.0 is its extremely fast charging capability.

During the announcement, Wang Chuanfu, Chairman of BYD, explained why the battery does not charge fully to 100%.
The system intentionally keeps the final 3% capacity reserved so that the vehicle can recuperate kinetic energy through regenerative braking immediately after leaving the charging station. This approach helps improve overall energy efficiency.
BYD also stated that only charging technologies capable of a full charge in under 9 minutes qualify as “Flash Charging.”
Strong Performance in Extreme Cold
One of the biggest issues for EVs is battery efficiency in cold weather. BYD claims the new Blade Battery 2.0 significantly improves performance in harsh winter conditions.
At –30°C, the battery can still charge in less than 12 minutes.
Charging from 20% to 97% in freezing temperatures takes only 3 minutes longer than under normal conditions.
This development could make electric vehicles more practical in colder regions.
Compatible With Millions of Charging Stations
Another major advantage of the new battery system is broad charging compatibility.
Vehicles equipped with Blade Battery 2.0 can use around 4.8 million public charging stations worldwide. Importantly, the battery does not require specialized proprietary charging terminals.
BYD claims that when connected to third-party charging stations, the battery can still charge 30–50% faster than competing EV batteries.
Higher Energy Density and Long Driving Range
Despite the dramatic increase in charging speed, BYD says energy density has improved by about 5% compared to the first-generation Blade Battery.
The first vehicle expected to use this new battery will be the Denza Z9GT, which will reportedly deliver a driving range of up to 1,036 km on a single charge.
Lifetime Warranty and High Safety Standards
To address concerns about battery degradation due to ultra-fast charging, BYD claims that frequent high-speed charging will not significantly affect battery lifespan.
