Changan Deepal S05 Electric SUV Debuts in Europe to Challenge VW ID.4 and Tesla Model Y

Changan launches the Deepal S05 electric crossover in Europe with up to 485 km range, 200 kW charging, and competitive pricing to rival VW ID.4 and Tesla Model Y.

One of China’s four largest automakers, Changan Automobile, is stepping up its global ambitions. Following the launch of the S07 from its sub-brand Deepal, the company has introduced the Deepal S05 — a stylish electric crossover positioned to challenge established C-segment rivals.

Chinese automakers entering Europe are often unfamiliar to buyers, and Changan is no exception. The Chongqing-based manufacturer — whose name roughly translates to “eternal security” — may still be relatively unknown in Europe, but it is a true heavyweight in China. With more than 40 years of automotive experience and over 30 million vehicles on the road, Changan is now targeting European growth.

In 2025 alone, the company sold nearly three million vehicles across 117 countries, including one million electric vehicles. Its brand portfolio includes Deepal, Nevo, and Avatr, alongside joint ventures with Western partners such as Ford Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation. This positions Changan not as a newcomer, but as a global volume manufacturer aiming to build a stronger foothold in Europe.

The market entry strategy begins with the design-focused Deepal brand, followed by the family-oriented Nevo lineup in early 2027. Changan plans to introduce eight new models in Germany by mid-2028.

Limited Retail Presence — For Now

After the launch of the Deepal S07 last summer, the slightly smaller but more advanced Deepal S05 now joins the lineup. Measuring just under 4.60 meters in length, the all-electric SUV enters the highly competitive C-segment, where it faces strong rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y.

However, market visibility may be limited initially, as the brand currently operates only five dealerships across Germany. The company is targeting a maximum customer distance of 120 km — roughly a 45-minute drive — to the nearest service point.

The Deepal S05 reflects an international development effort. It was designed at the company’s design center in Turin and technically co-developed at its R&D facility in Birmingham, where European-specific tuning was completed. More than 150 modifications were reportedly made compared with the Chinese-market version, including chassis revisions and localization of driver-assistance systems and software.

Design: Modern with Familiar Influences

Visually, the five-door crossover makes a confident impression. A wide stance, flared wheel arches housing standard 20-inch wheels, and clean coupé-like lines define its look. The styling bears the signature of chief designer Klaus Zyciora, formerly associated with Volkswagen’s ID family.

Frameless windows, flush door handles, slim LED headlights, and a raised front end give the S05 a distinctly modern presence that inevitably invites comparisons with established European EVs.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the S05 follows the minimalist approach common among new Chinese SUVs. The cabin is modern, well-finished, and largely button-free, with most functions controlled via a 15.4-inch touchscreen. To reduce glare, the display automatically swivels up to 15 degrees toward the driver or passenger — a feature Changan calls the “Sunflower Effect.”

The system runs on a powerful Qualcomm chipset, delivering smooth graphics and quick responses. Over-the-air updates are expected to resolve minor software glitches noted during early testing.

Standard equipment is generous and includes:

  • 1.9-square-meter panoramic glass roof

  • 14-speaker premium audio system

  • “Queen’s Seat” front passenger lounge function

  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability

The Max trim further adds an augmented-reality head-up display.

Practicality is strong, with a trunk capacity of 492 to 1,250 liters plus a 159-liter frunk.

Charging, Range, and Performance

The Deepal S05 is built on Changan’s CPA platform, which also supports future plug-in hybrid and range-extender variants.

Powertrain Options

RWD variant

  • 200 kW (272 hp)

  • Range: up to 485 km (WLTP)

  • Price: €38,990

AWD variant

  • 320 kW (435 hp)

  • Range: up to 445 km (WLTP)

  • Price: €44,990

Both versions use a 68.8 kWh LFP battery with a standard heat pump and support up to 200 kW DC fast charging on a 400-volt architecture. Changan claims a 30–80 percent charge in just 15 minutes.

Performance is strong, particularly in the AWD model, which can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. Ride comfort remains acceptable even on 20-inch wheels, though overall chassis refinement still falls slightly short of the Volkswagen ID.4 benchmark.

The Deepal S05 emerges as a modern and competitive electric crossover capable of standing alongside established rivals. Strong performance, generous equipment, and competitive pricing give it real potential.

However, long-term success in Germany will depend less on the product itself and more on how quickly Changan Automobile can expand its sales and service network — and build customer trust. A seven-year vehicle warranty and eight-year battery warranty are positive first steps, but the brand still has work to do to secure its place in the European EV market.
