Chinese EV maker NIO has achieved a major milestone. Its Firefly electric car has won the 2026 World Urban Car of the Year (WUCOTY) award at the prestigious New York International Auto Show, held on April 1 in New York.
The NIO Firefly outperformed strong competitors like the Baojun Yep Plus / Chevrolet Spark EUV and Hyundai Venue to secure this global recognition. Notably, the Firefly is an electric hatchback/SUV crossover with a starting price of 119,800 CNY (approx. ₹16 lakh) in China.
Eligibility Criteria for World Car Awards
To qualify for the World Urban Car award, vehicles must meet the following conditions:
- Annual production of at least 10,000 units
- Priced below luxury car levels in their main market
- Available in at least two major global markets across different continents
- Sold between January 1, 2025, and March 30, 2026
NIO Firefly: Price and Battery Options
In the Chinese market, the NIO Firefly is offered with multiple battery options:
- Base Price: 119,800 CNY (~₹16 lakh)
- Top Variant: 125,800 CNY (~₹17 lakh)
- With BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service): Starts at 79,800 CNY (~₹10 lakh)
The BaaS model significantly reduces the upfront cost, making EV ownership more accessible.

The Firefly is a compact electric car measuring 4,003 mm in length and comes with a rear-mounted motor:

- Battery: 41.2 kWh (LFP)
- Range: 330 km (WLTP)
- 0–100 km/h: ~8 seconds
Charging and Battery Swapping
- DC Fast Charging: Up to 100 kW
- Charging Time: 10% to 80% in ~29 minutes
NIO is also planning to introduce battery swapping technology for the Firefly. Access to its 5th-generation swap stations is expected to begin in May 2026, further enhancing convenience for users.
Sales Performance
The NIO Firefly has shown strong market performance in China:
- Total Deliveries (till March 2026): 50,935 units
- 50,000 milestone achieved: March 28, 2026
- Peak monthly sales: 7,084 units (December 2025)
2026 started on a slower note:
- January: 2,807 units
- February: 2,657 units
However, sales rebounded strongly in March:
- March 2026: 6,117 units (130% growth over February)
Total deliveries in Q1 2026 reached 11,581 units, and the company is targeting 6,000–6,500 units per month in Q2.
