Honda Cars India Limited is implementing a new strategy to strengthen its waning brand image in India. The company is preparing to import certain global models as part of its 10-model launch plan in the second half of this decade.
Ahead of the locally-made 0 Alpha SUV arriving in 2027, the company plans to bring the Honda Prelude Coupe, Honda ZR-V Hybrid, and fully electric Honda 0 SUV to India between 2026 and 2027. The objective is clear—to reinvigorate the brand’s premium appeal and technology image.
Honda’s brand pyramid was once strong.
Once upon a time, Honda’s brand structure in India was quite clear.
. The Honda Accord and Honda CR-V at the flagship level.
. The Honda Civic at the mid-level.
. The Honda City at the entry level.
This hierarchy made the brand aspirational. However, the company later introduced several models in the lower segments, such as:
Honda Amaze, Honda Brio, Honda BR-V, Honda Jazz, and Honda WR-V.
These gradually weakened the brand’s premium positioning. Due to increasing competition and cost pressures, Honda discontinued several models, closed factories, and reduced its lineup. As a result, today Honda in India largely resembles a mass-market brand.
Honda Prelude Hybrid Coupe
Launch: First half of 2026
Among Honda’s upcoming imports, the Prelude is the most emotional card. The iconic nameplate from the 80s and 90s is making a comeback as a 2.0-liter, nearly 200hp front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe featuring simulated gear-shift technology.
For India, the company is finalizing E20 compatibility and tire specifications. The model will be brought in via the CBU route in limited numbers—this will be Honda’s first two-door offering in India.
Challenges:
. Not as good as the Type-R’s performance
. Estimated price ~₹80 lakh
. Appeal primarily limited to enthusiasts
Honda ZR-V Hybrid
Launch: Late 2026
Of the three imports, the ZR-V is considered the most practical product. It is a premium crossover SUV positioned below the CR-V globally.
Expected Specs:
. 2.0-liter hybrid
. Approximately 180hp
. AWD option
. e-CVT gearbox
A potential price of ₹50–60 lakh may make it niche, but it will play a key role as a hybrid technology showcase. If positioned correctly, it could strengthen Honda’s technological image.
Honda 0 SUV: Technology Flagship
Launch: Mid-2027

The fully electric Honda 0 SUV will be the most high-end offering in the import lineup. It will be based on the company’s new 0 Series EV architecture, which will debut globally next year.
What’s Special:
. Concept-car-like futuristic design
. Estimated 80–100kWh battery
. Approximately 500km real-world range
. Next-gen software stack
It is expected to be priced above ₹80 lakh, making it a direct entry into the luxury EV segment.
It’s worth noting that the smaller Alpha SUV will be locally produced in India, while the larger SUV will be a fully imported tech flagship.
Will imports restore Honda’s luster?
Strategically, this move by Honda appears to be a step towards brand “re-elevation.” Low-volume, high-image models often help improve brand perception.
But the challenges are not without:
. Very high prices
. Limited volumes
. Strong German and Korean competition in India
. Local product lineup still thin
Only if Honda brings a strong local product strategy to India alongside these imports can the brand’s former premium identity fully regain. For now, these models appear to be more “brand builders,” not major volume drivers.
