Lucid Lunar Robotaxi Revealed as Company Expands Autonomous Strategy

Lucid Motors reveals Lunar robotaxi concept and plans autonomous Gravity SUV with Uber and Nuro as part of its future mobility strategy.

Lucid Motors has unveiled the Lunar, a two-seat robotaxi concept with no steering wheel or pedals, aimed at the future of autonomous transportation.

At its investor day in New York, Lucid Motors debuted the robotaxi concept, dubbed Lunar. The vehicle is a two-seat electric car with no steering wheel or pedals, built on the platform set to underpin Lucid’s upcoming line of midsize electric vehicles.

According to interim CEO Marc Winterhoff, the Lunar is still in its early stages. The company clarified that it is not actively developing this specific robotaxi, though the underlying platform and autonomous driving technologies are already being tested on other models.

Lucid Motors also announced its intention to collaborate with Uber and Nuro to create an autonomous version of the Gravity SUV, expected to launch in Uber’s San Francisco network by the end of the year. Details about how Nuro’s technology will be integrated into the autonomous Gravity SUV have not yet been disclosed.

A key part of Lucid Motors’ strategy is developing subscription services for its DreamDrive Pro autonomous driving system. Starting in 2027, users will be able to choose their level of autonomy for a monthly fee — from basic driver assistance at $69 to fully autonomous mode at $199, although fully autonomous driving at that level has not yet been commercially deployed by any automaker.

The company expects future revenue from robotaxis and autonomous feature subscriptions to eventually surpass income from licensing its electric drivetrain technology. Tesla and Rivian, among others, are already pursuing a similar strategy.

Lucid Motors is focusing on reducing production costs and improving the efficiency of its electric powertrains to make its new models more competitively priced, starting at approximately $50,000. The first production vehicles, the Lucid Cosmos and Lucid Earth, will hit the market before the end of the year.
