Toyota Aygo X Hybrid: Small Car, Big Efficiency Upgrade
Toyota is transforming its Aygo X city car into a part-time electric vehicle. With the introduction of a new hybrid powertrain, fuel consumption drops to levels once associated with three-liter cars. Impressively, the compact model can also operate in pure electric mode more frequently than expected.
As a pioneer in hybrid technology—dating back nearly 30 years to the Prius—Toyota is now bringing this innovation to its smallest segment. While many manufacturers are exiting the affordable city car category or shifting toward expensive EVs, Toyota is strengthening its position by electrifying the Aygo X.
A Smart Upgrade for Urban Drivers
With the facelift, the Aygo X becomes around 10% more expensive, starting at €19,990. However, the added cost brings clear benefits. The new hybrid system significantly reduces fuel consumption while also improving overall driving comfort.
Unlike the earlier version, which felt basic and underpowered, the updated Aygo X now delivers a more refined and mature driving experience. It is better suited for daily use, offering a balance of efficiency and practicality.
Engine and Hybrid Performance
The biggest transformation lies under the hood. The previous 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine producing 73 hp has been replaced with a more advanced setup borrowed from the Yaris.
The new 1.5-liter petrol engine, combined with an electric motor, produces a total output of 116 hp—an increase of more than 50%. This upgrade makes the Aygo X noticeably more responsive and easier to drive in both city and highway conditions.
Acceleration and Driving Comfort
Performance improvements are evident in everyday driving. The Aygo X now accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds, making city driving smoother and overtaking less stressful.
The hybrid system also reduces engine noise significantly. Even though the car still uses a CVT automatic transmission, the driving experience is now more refined, with less intrusive engine sound compared to its predecessor.
Fuel Efficiency and Emissions
One of the biggest advantages of the new hybrid system is its efficiency. Fuel consumption drops to as low as 3.7 liters per 100 km, making it one of the most economical non-plug-in cars available.
CO₂ emissions are rated at just 85 g/km, positioning the Aygo X among the cleanest vehicles in its class—without requiring external charging.
Chassis, Handling, and Ride Quality
Toyota has also improved the chassis and steering setup. The Aygo X remains agile and easy to maneuver in tight urban spaces, while offering better stability on open roads.
The new GR-inspired version adds a sportier feel, with firmer suspension and sharper handling. Despite this, the car still absorbs bumps and uneven roads comfortably, making it ideal for city driving.
Design and Exterior Updates
To accommodate the hybrid system, Toyota redesigned the front end and slightly increased the car’s length to 3.78 meters. Updated headlights and a revised grille give the Aygo X a more mature and modern look.
The availability of a roll-top roof continues to add a fun, almost convertible-like experience—perfect for urban and seasonal driving.
Interior and Space Practicality
Inside, the Aygo X feels more modern, with improved displays and a better-quality cockpit. Front passengers enjoy a comfortable experience, but rear space remains limited due to the short wheelbase.
Entry and exit to the rear seats can be challenging because of the small door openings. Despite this, Toyota has cleverly positioned the hybrid battery under the rear seats, ensuring that boot space remains unchanged at 231 liters.
Not Built for Highways, but Perfect for the City
While the Aygo X now includes features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, it is still primarily designed for urban use. At higher speeds, cabin noise increases, and the car feels less stable compared to larger vehicles.
However, for city commuting and short trips, it delivers excellent efficiency and ease of use.
