Volkswagen’s Polo hatchback has always had a loyal fanbase — and the iconic nameplate is set for a comeback. Although the Polo was discontinued in the Indian market, Volkswagen is reviving it as a fully electric model, initially for the European market. A launch is expected later this year, possibly as early as May. Ahead of the official reveal, production-spec images of the Volkswagen ID. Polo EV have surfaced on Reddit, giving us our clearest look yet.
Familiar Silhouette, Electric Soul
At its core, the ID. Polo EV retains the silhouette of its discontinued petrol sibling. Volkswagen has wisely preserved much of the original Polo’s clean, unpretentious design language — a move that should help the model maintain a strong emotional connection with long-time fans as it transitions to an electric platform. There is also hope that the ID. Polo could eventually make its way to the Indian market, with reports of a potential launch having surfaced previously.
Exterior Design
The ID. Polo EV takes clear design cues from the ID. 2all concept. Key styling highlights include wraparound headlamps with high-mounted LED DRLs, a closed-off grille, and a slatted lower bumper. The side profile features rounded wheel arches, conventional front door handles, C-pillar-mounted rear door handles, a blacked-out B-pillar, and a gently sloping roofline. The charging port is positioned on the right side, just above the front fender. Alloy wheel designs are largely carried over from the concept, though options are expected to vary by variant. The door mirrors are noticeably more practical and production-ready compared to the slim units seen on the concept car.
The leaked images also reveal an ID. Polo GTI variant with a distinctly sportier appearance. It features an illuminated Volkswagen logo, vertically mounted LED DRLs in addition to the overhead units, and a honeycomb-patterned bumper with red accents for a youthful, performance-oriented look. The GTI badge is visible on the right side of the rear.
Dimensionally, the ID. Polo EV measures 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase — notably larger than the sub-4-metre Polo that was sold in India.
Interior
Inside, Volkswagen has prioritised practicality and ease of use. The cabin features a generous number of physical controls alongside a fully digital setup. The centrepiece is a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
Drivers can personalise their display theme for a more tailored experience. A standout option is the ‘Retro Mode’, inspired by the original Golf Mk1, which replaces the standard UI with a tape deck-style interface on the touchscreen and analogue-style dials on the driver’s display — complete with rotary controls for volume and radio tuning. The steering wheel also houses buttons for media and driver assistance functions.
Battery, Range, and Charging
The ID. Polo EV will be the first Volkswagen model built on the MEB Entry (MEB+) platform. Two battery options will be available: a 38 kWh pack and a larger 56 kWh pack, with the latter offering a claimed range of up to 451 km. All variants will feature front-wheel drive (FWD), and DC fast charging support of up to 125 kW will be available across the range. The performance-focused GTI variant is expected to produce a maximum output of 226 hp.
