Volvo Cars has introduced a new generation of seat belt technology that can automatically adjust itself to each passenger.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the seat belt, Volvo announced a new safety system called the Multi-Adaptive Seat Belt. The technology will debut in the upcoming Volvo EX60, which is expected to go on sale in late 2026.
Traditional seat belts operate the same way for every passenger. However, Volvo’s new system uses multiple sensors to analyze an occupant’s parameters in real time. The technology evaluates factors such as body type, seating posture, and the deceleration rate during an impact.
Based on this data, the system instantly adjusts the belt’s restraint force. For larger occupants, the tension is increased to help prevent head injuries, while for lighter occupants and children, the force is reduced to minimize the risk of chest injuries caused by the belt itself.
The system is designed to improve continuously. Through over-the-air software updates, the safety algorithms can adapt to new body types, driving situations, and real-world crash data over time.
