Royal Enfield E20 Kit: Increases mileage and reduces maintenance! Royal Enfield introduces the ‘E20’ conversion kit for older bikes.

Royal Enfield E20 Kit: Many people have long complained about the use of ethanol blended fuel, or E20. Now, Royal Enfield has introduced a special conversion kit for its older BS3 and BS4 bikes. Owners of older vehicles can install it for a nominal cost. This will not only increase mileage but also eliminate the risk of parts damage.

There’s good news for those who ride older Royal Enfield bikes. If you’ve relied on your Royal Enfield for years, a definitive solution to your E20 petrol-related problems has now emerged. Understanding the needs of its longtime customers, the company has taken a special step that could prove to be very helpful for those using BS3 and BS4 models.

According to Autocar, Royal Enfield has introduced a special E20 conversion kit for its older bike customers. This conversion kit can be used on BS3 and BS4 models of the older Bullet, Classic 350, and Thunderbird. Owners of older bikes can now install genuine E20-compatible carburetors. This is intended to eliminate problems related to rust and rubber seals.

E20 petrol and rising complaints

Several reports have stated that the high ethanol content of E20 petrol is causing fuel system malfunctions. This not only reduces vehicle mileage but also increases vehicle maintenance costs due to technical problems with engine components. A survey conducted by the LocalCircles agency revealed that eight out of ten people said no to the current E20 (ethanol blend fuel).

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) also largely acknowledged this. The ministry stated on the social networking site ‘X’ that, “Due to the lower energy density of ethanol compared to regular petrol, there is a slight reduction in mileage, estimated at 1–2% for four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20, and approximately 3–6% for other vehicles.”

What will change… how much will it cost

Royal Enfield has introduced this option specifically for customers who still drive older BS3 and BS4 models. The company is replacing the entire carburetor assembly to address the issues caused by E20 fuel. Gaskets and oil seals are also being installed that are E20 fuel-compliant. According to reports, this conversion kit costs approximately ₹1,700.

Some media reports indicate the price of a genuine carburetor to be around ₹3,000 to ₹4,200. Replacing the seal and gasket is estimated to cost around ₹1,200 to ₹1,800. This conversion kit is useful for vehicle owners with models sold between 2009 and 2020. These are non-E20 compatible models.

After receiving ethanol-blended petrol from the government, many former Royal Enfield owners have reported problems such as cold start issues, engine misfires, unstable idling, and fuel leaks. While some blame E20 fuel for these issues, the government says no major problems have been reported. In addition to Royal Enfield, companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, TVS Motor Company, and Bajaj Auto are also offering E20-compatible retrofit kits.

Points to note

It’s also important to note that ethanol has a lower energy density than regular gasoline. This may slightly impact mileage. A fuel system cleaner can be used for improved performance. When adding the cleaner, ensure the tank is at least half full of fuel to ensure proper mixing and effectiveness.
