Maruti Suzuki Ignis Discontinued? Bookings Halted as Stock Runs Low Across India

Ignis Bookings Stopped, Limited Stock Left

Nearly nine years after its launch, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis appears to be nearing the end of its journey in India. Most dealerships have reportedly stopped accepting new bookings, mainly due to limited stock availability at only a few outlets.

While the car is still listed on the official website of Maruti Suzuki, its production halt news has already started circulating widely. Customers can still find units at select dealerships, where heavy discounts are likely to clear remaining inventory.

Price and Market Position

The Ignis was priced between ₹5.35 lakh and ₹7.55 lakh (ex-showroom). Despite being an affordable offering, it stood out with a premium interior and unique design.

In its segment, it competed with cars like:

  • Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
  • Tata Tiago

However, it consistently lagged behind both in terms of sales.

Top Reasons Why Maruti Suzuki Ignis Failed

1. Continuous Decline in Sales

The Ignis witnessed a steady drop in sales over recent months. Between October 2025 and March 2026, sales declined significantly:

  • October 2025: 2,316 units
  • March 2026: 1,250 units

Even at Nexa showrooms, the Ignis struggled. Though models like Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Maruti Suzuki Invicto sell in lower numbers, they belong to a much higher price segment.

Ignis 2,645 2,316 1,910 1,902 1,848 1,250
Jimny 592 802 757 591 532 656
Invicto 301 410 514 197 143 191

2. Weak Position in Segment

The Ignis was positioned as a premium hatchback but failed to match rivals. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios averages over 5,000 units/month, while the Tata Tiago crosses 7,000 units/month.

This clear gap highlights Ignis’ weak demand in its own segment.

Ignis 2,645 2,316 1,910 1,902 1,848 1,250
Grand i10 Nios 5,426 4,559 4,010 7,710 5,589 5,032
Tiago 8,850 5,988 5,826 8,349 7,040 7,119

3. Strong Competition Within Maruti Lineup

One of the biggest challenges for the Ignis came from its own brand. Maruti Suzuki offers multiple options in a similar price range:

  • Maruti Suzuki WagonR – Starts at ₹4.99 lakh
  • Maruti Suzuki Swift – Starts at ₹5.79 lakh

The WagonR is cheaper, while the Swift offers better appeal and significantly higher sales, making Ignis less attractive.

Swift 15,542 19,733 18,767 17,806 14,833 14,545
WagonR 18,970 14,619 14,575 15,118 14,885 17,025

4. Lack of Updates and Safety Features

In recent years, Maruti updated many of its cars with improved safety features. For example, the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 now comes with 6 airbags as standard.

In comparison, the Ignis continued with just 2 airbags and basic safety features, making it less competitive. With production reportedly halted, chances of future updates are now almost zero.

5. No CNG Option

CNG cars are gaining popularity in India due to rising fuel costs. Maruti offers factory-fitted CNG options in several models, including:

  • Maruti Suzuki Baleno
  • Maruti Suzuki WagonR
  • Maruti Suzuki Swift

However, the Ignis never received a CNG variant, which pushed many buyers toward other models.

Conclusion

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis had a unique identity and premium appeal, but declining sales, lack of updates, and strong competition ultimately led to its downfall. With bookings halted and stock running low, the model is likely on its way out of the Indian market.
