Maruti’s New Micro SUV to Replace Ignis, Multiple Powertrain Options Expected

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch an all-new micro SUV, codenamed Y43, which is expected to replace the discontinued Maruti Suzuki Ignis. While the company has not officially confirmed the launch timeline, the model is expected to arrive in the market next year. It will be sold through Nexa dealerships.

The upcoming micro SUV is expected to compete with models like the Tata Punch and other compact SUVs in the segment.

Multiple Powertrain Options Expected

Maruti Suzuki is likely to offer the Y43 micro SUV with multiple powertrain options, including mild-hybrid petrol, CNG/CBG, and even an electric version. A strong hybrid variant based on the 1.2-litre Z-series engine could also be introduced.

The SUV is expected to feature a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with a mild-hybrid setup. Additionally, a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine could be offered with both manual and automatic transmission options. This model will primarily target first-time buyers looking for a compact SUV with higher ground clearance.

Expected Platform and Design

The new micro SUV is likely to feature upright SUV styling along with premium features. It is expected to be based on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, which also underpins models like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and Maruti Suzuki Dzire.

Maruti aims for the Y43 to generate additional annual sales of around 2.5 lakh units. Like the Ignis, this new SUV will also be retailed through Nexa’s premium dealership network.

Maruti YMC Electric MPV Also in the Pipeline

Alongside the micro SUV, Maruti is also working on a new electric MPV, codenamed YMC. This three-row EV is expected to launch in India in the last quarter of 2026, likely ahead of the Diwali festive season.

The YMC MPV will compete with models like the Kia Carens Clavis EV and BYD eMax 7. It is expected to share several components with the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, including its battery pack, electric motor, and platform.

A rebadged Toyota version of this electric MPV could also arrive in India by early 2027. The model is likely to offer 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery pack options, with a claimed range of up to 500 km on a single charge.
