NHAI has issued a critical warning about fraudulent websites offering fake FASTag Annual Passes. As digital payments continue to grow across India, cybercriminals are exploiting users by creating highly convincing fake portals that mimic official FASTag platforms.
How the FASTag Scam Works
According to NHAI, scammers design websites that closely resemble legitimate government portals. These fake platforms often appear at the top of search results using paid ads and SEO tactics. Once users land on these sites, they are prompted to enter sensitive details such as mobile numbers, vehicle registration numbers, and banking information.
Victims, believing the site is genuine, complete the payment process. The money is then transferred directly to the fraudsters, and in many cases, users either receive no confirmation or are issued fake receipts—without any actual FASTag service.
Government and Cyber Agency Alerts
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has also flagged similar scams in the past. Officials emphasize that modern phishing websites are increasingly sophisticated, making them difficult to distinguish from real platforms at first glance.
How to Stay Safe
To avoid falling victim to such scams, NHAI recommends the following precautions:
- Use only official platforms like the Rajmargyatra for FASTag-related services
- Avoid clicking on sponsored links or unknown ads on search engines
- Always verify the website URL before entering any personal details
- Never share OTPs, bank details, or passwords with unverified sources
- Exit immediately if a website appears suspicious or unfamiliar
Rising Risk of Online Fraud
With the rapid adoption of digital services, the risk of online fraud is also increasing. Even a minor lapse in judgment can lead to financial loss and data theft. Staying cautious, verifying sources, and relying only on trusted platforms are essential steps to ensure online safety.
